I am Rachel Harries, an old hermit living in Barry (made famous by "Gavin and Stacey") South Wales UK. I love all things psychological, physiological, spiritual, artistic and natural. I am fascinated by the natural rhythms of all things and the interweaving patterns of life and the universe.

My earliest memories are of making things with my grandparents who were both very creative and as children our hands were never idle, my Grandfather taught me to knit and both grandparents encouraged me to paint and create at every opportunity and it’s remained a part of my life in varying degrees.

I love all crafts, painting and drawing are what I do the most of and I’m currently teaching on an online art journal course which is something very close to my heart. I also paint for a small business which is an absolute joy, mainly small series of watercolour or mixed media pieces. I am a huge fan of yarn and fabric crafts and have, I am very happy plonked in front of the tv with a hook and yarn to while away an evening. I also enjoy incorporating crafts, like adding stitchwork to papercrafts, paintings or journals. Or adding pieces of dyed fabric or pieces of beadwork its lovely being able to intermingle different media.

I love all kinds of media as well as my paint and paint brushes, I love die cutting and stamping, it fabulous to see how many different designs you can make from one product. My inspiration comes from the world around me, it may be a visit to a museum or a lovely walk, a colour pallete someone has used in their wallpaper, sometimes a book I’m reading, a poem or a song. I also like to look at other artists stories, and artwork.

I am always interested in new opportunities and experiences, so becoming part of hobbybase's Design Team, foots the bill perfectly!! I look forward to sharing my makes and what I learn about new products with you and revisiting favourites and essentials.

Layered Orange Dragon Card

09/01/2019 11:50

  1. Cut out a piece of card to use as your background and apply the distress oxide ink. When dry stick to your card blank.
  2. Die cut the grass from a suitable coloured card and stick it along the bottom of your background card.
  3. Die cut the dragon twice, with a different colour of card each time.
  4. Stick the dragon in your selected colour to the card.
  5. Take the negative/pushed out pieces from the other coloured dragon's wings, tail and belly.
  6. Stick the "negatives" from the second dragon into the appropriate spaces on your dragon on the card.
  7. Finish off your card with a googly eye on the dragon and use a needle, pricker tool or similar to gently lift the scales slightly to give them a raised effect.

Mr Foxy Square Card

20/11/2018 11:50

  1. Prepare a piece of square card, slightly smaller than the card blank you're using for the body of the card.
  2. Mask off the "moon" using a circular piece of card, a small plate or something similar.
  3. Using Distress Oxide Inks, create the moonshine background. Starting with the dark back layer and building it up from there.
  4. Remove your moon mask and stamp your design directly onto the card over this (the fox in this instance!).
  5. Stick down your finished image onto a square of larger white card and then stick to your card blank for a simple, but beautiful card!
